Alhambra Latino Association (ALA) and Alhambra Preservation Group (APG) received large donations from the now closed nonprofit media publication Alhambra Source. The contribution honors the devotion of the recently deceased Michael Parks, Alhambra Source co-founder, to the Alhambra community and its vital community organizations.
Launched in 2010, Alhambra Source served the diverse communities of the San Gabriel Valley with unique stories that highlighted immigrant narratives and student voices. Built on two years of research by professors and students at USC Annenberg’s School for Communication and Journalism, Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Michael Parks led the nonprofit news outlet until it’s closure in 2020.
The contributions from the Alhambra Source Fund was initiated by Ball-Rokeach following the passing of Parks this year. Ball-Rokeach is an esteemed professor emerita of communication at USC Annenberg, and former director of the Communication Technology and Community Program. She collaborated with Parks, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist and editor for The Los Angeles Times, to train young journalists in the SGV to voice their stories and partner with local non-profits like Alhambra Latinoc Association and Alhambra Preservation Group to ignite civic engagement in the city of Alhambra and the San Gabriel Valley.
“Michael was a pioneer in stressing the importance of local news for the ability of communities to participate in democracy.” Sandra Ball-Rokeach
